ICON11 is less than 2 weeks away!

June 16, 2022

Happy Summer everyone! Now that we’re into summer, we’re gearing up for the ICON11 conference, and we couldn’t be more excited!! In just a few weeks, on June 29 & 30, KCAI will welcome and host ICON11 attendees as they attend ICON11 Workshops across campus as well as the ICON11 Education Symposium at the Nelson Atkins Auditorium at the Nelson Atkins Museum. The Main Stage presentations and the heart of the conference is on July 1 & 2 and will be held at the historic Folly theater in downtown KC.

I am proud to say that 1/3 of the workshops being held are being taught by KCAI full-time and adjunct faculty members. I am so grateful for their help and willingness to contribute to this stellar conference. Pulling this conference together during a pandemic has been a challenge and I know the ICON board is so appreciative, as am I. Most of the workshops will be held in the Illustration Building in the Tony Jones Studios, but there are workshops in Epperson Auditorium, Printmaking and Painting as well. Most of the workshops are sold out!

BIG THANKS to all of the faculty for making these workshops happen! Take a look at this fantastic line-up!

Elizabeth Baddeley (Illustration adjunct) Sketchbook Burnout Buster

Laura Berman Exploring Line & Shape with Intaglio

Michelle Dreher (Illustration/Printmaking adjunct) + Angie Dreher (aka Two Tone Press) Legopress Printing Workshop

John Ferry Oil Painting Demo

Tyler Galloway & Lisa Maione Visual Comparisons: Creative Strategies for Making Meaning

Dean Kube (Illustration adjunct) Costumed Figure Drawing

Adam Lucas Difficult Drawings: Unlearning Drawing Through DIY Mark-Making Tools

Frank Norton (Illustration adjunct) Going Solo: Making the Leap to Full-Time Freelance

David Terrill Build Your Own Pochade Box and Take Your Studio on the Road

Hector Casanova Collaborating Out of the Box: Blurring the lines between media, disciplines, performers and audience

BIG THANKS, too, to all of the staff who have helped, contributed and supported this effort with your time and expertise. I greatly appreciate it!!

For more information about ICON11 and the many events that make up the conference, check out their website: theillustrationconference.org. Tickets are still available though Eventbrite, here.

All the above images & lettering is by KCAI Illustration alum Kelsey Wroten (‘15). Check out more of her work at kelseywroten.com.
